If you’ve been reconsidering your shower, you’ve probably noticed a shift in high-end residential design: tile grids and grout lines are giving way to seamless, continuous surfaces. Microcement shower stalls are what’s making that possible, and for homeowners who want that finish done right, the system behind the material matters as much as the look itself.
Develine RQ Series microcements are engineered specifically for demanding applications like decorative shower stalls. The system uses a layered approach, each product designed to work with the one below it, so that the surface you live with every day is as durable as it is beautiful.
Here’s what goes into a Develine microcement shower and why every layer of the system earns its place.
The biggest selling point of a microcement shower is the one most people already know: no grout lines. But the reasons that matters go beyond aesthetics. Grout lines are where mildew starts, where moisture works its way into the substrate, and where a shower’s maintenance burden accumulates over time. Eliminating them removes all of that.
Why Microcement Works So Well in a Shower
Beyond that, a properly installed microcement shower offers:
A seamless surface from floor to ceiling. The material flows continuously across the pan, up the walls, and across any bench or niche, creating a unified space rather than a patchwork of tile pieces and transitions.
Genuine waterproofing. Microcement itself is water-resistant, but a properly waterproofed shower installs a dedicated membrane beneath the microcement system, which is what actually keeps moisture from reaching the structure behind the walls.
Adaptability to existing substrates. Depending on the condition of the existing shower structure, microcement goes directly over existing surfaces, which eliminates demolition costs and reduces installation time.
Design flexibility. Develine RQ microcements can be integrally colored with Aquacolor, and the surface is available in a range of textures from the tactile RQ Fine to the ultra-smooth RQ Superfine. The finish you choose shapes the character of the entire space.
Low-maintenance upkeep. A sealed microcement surface requires no grout cleaning, no re-sealing on a regular schedule, and no specialized tools. pH-neutral soap and water handles routine maintenance.
The Develine RQ Installation System, Layer by Layer
What distinguishes a successful microcement shower from a failed one is the integrity of the system underneath the surface. The Develine RQ Series is applied in a specific sequence, and each layer has a defined role.
The diagram below shows the full cross-section of a Develine shower stall installation.

Substrate and Structure
Before any Develine product goes down, the substrate has to be right. Walls use moisture-resistant drywall. The shower floor is recessed to create a basin, and a flange-type drain (such as the Kerdi drain) is installed at the low point.
Spiderlath Fiberglass Mesh
At the joint where the wall meets the basin floor, Spiderlath fiberglass reinforcement mesh is embedded, extending at least 12 inches vertically and 12 inches horizontally. This critical reinforcement step goes in beneath the waterproofing layer and prevents cracking at the most stress-prone area of the entire installation.
Waterproofing Membrane
A continuous waterproofing membrane is applied over the basin and up the walls, extending at least 12 inches past the high point. This layer is non-negotiable in a shower environment. The Develine microcement system goes on top of it; the membrane is what protects the structure below from moisture infiltration.
Param FP Fiber-Reinforced Mortar (when needed)
Param FP is a Duraamen fiber-reinforced mortar used when the shower basin doesn’t already have a proper drainage slope. It’s built up around the perimeter of the basin floor to create a gradual, even pitch toward the drain flange, and in doing so it also forms a stable, reinforced base for the waterproofing and microcement layers that follow. If the existing basin already drains correctly, Param FP is not part of the installation.
BC Regular (1 to 2 Layers)
BC Regular is the base coat of the Develine system. Applied in two to three thin layers over the waterproofed substrate, it builds the thickness and consistency needed for the finish coats to perform correctly. Each BC Regular layer is applied, allowed to cure, and lightly abraded before the next is applied.
RQ Fine and RQ Superfine
These are the finish coats that give a Develine shower its character. RQ Fine is a resinous quartz microcement with a refined, slightly tactile texture. It works well on shower floors where some grip underfoot is desirable. RQ Superfine delivers an ultra-smooth, contemporary finish suited to walls and vertical surfaces where a more polished look is the goal.
Both go over BC Regular in thin passes. This is where color takes shape, whether through the natural tone of the microcement or through integral pigment mixed with Aquacolor.
Aqua 2K Matte Varnish (2 Coats)
The Aqua 2K Matte Varnish is the final layer and the one that seals everything below it. Develine recommends two coats. This professional-grade two-component topcoat creates a durable, water-resistant surface that holds up to daily shower use, cleaning products, and foot traffic. For shower floors where traction matters, you can add an anti-skid additive directly to the varnish.
What the Finished Microcement Shower Looks Like
A completed Develine shower stall is continuous and seamless. The surface reads as a single material across the floor, walls, and any built-in elements. There are no joints, no grout lines, no tile edges.
The visual character depends on the products and colors chosen. RQ Fine has a warmer, more mineral quality that reads well in earthy or neutral palettes. RQ Superfine on walls can approach the look of polished stone, especially in lighter tones with even lighting. Requesting physical sample applications from your installer before committing to a color is the right way to make that decision.
Maintenance is straightforward. Standard pH-neutral cleaners handle routine upkeep. The sealed surface resists mildew and doesn’t require the grout maintenance that tile demands.
A Note on Installation
The Develine RQ Series is a professional-grade system. The layering sequence, timing between coats, surface preparation, and application technique all require hands-on experience to execute correctly. Rushing any stage, or skipping a step, compromises the performance of everything above it.
If you’re interested in a Develine microcement shower, the right first step is working with a certified installer who has experience with this specific system in wet environments.
